MDI is a sustainable social enterprise aligned with its mission, values and performance metrics.

MDI is a strong and sustainable social enterprise positively impacting the lives of individuals with disabilities in the three communities it serves St. Paul, Hibbing, and Grand Rapids.  The organization has successfully regained its focus on mission with the appropriate business and funding model.  MDI has achieved its strategic goals of becoming a financially stable social enterprise with the funding to support its program services and the competitive contracts to support wages and employment opportunities.  It is the balance between funding grants and competitive diversified contracts that has created the financial stability for the organization.

MDI maintains a “triple bottom line” to manage the organization.

  1. The social or mission bottom line supports career and technical development of individuals with disabilities.  MDI through progressive development helps to enhance or improve lives and creates vocational opportunities for individuals with a range of disabilities.  MDI provides challenging job opportunities.  Employees can earn a wage and comprehensive benefits package, develop transferable skills, and achieve personal goals for independence and self-sufficiency.  MDI expanded its extensive training programs in order to support individuals with disabilities to increase their skill sets, level of responsibilities and eventual income.
  2. The financial bottom line is maintained through stable competitive contracts with the goal of having no commercial customer greater than 10% of the sales.  These contracts include new governmental departments, Fortune 1000 companies, small businesses and other nonprofit organizations.  These contracts make up 80% of the funding for MDI providing a stable and sustainable funding base for the organization.
  3. The funding bottom line is maintained through grants and contributions to support the services and programs of MDI.  Funding is 20% of the overall revenue and includes diversified funding from government, foundations and individuals.  The mission has become so strong that donors are active and ongoing contributors to the organization.
