Senior Leadership Team
The MDI leadership team provides guidance and oversight to the organization in pursuit of its mission to create employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Their individual and collective leadership experience ensures that the strategies, operations and culture of the organization lead to service excellence, organizational vitality and meaningful job opportunities.
President & CEO
Peter McDermott is President & CEO of Minnesota Diversified Industries, Inc. (MDI). Previously he served as President of Itasca Economic Development Corporation which is a county wide non-profit economic development organization in northern Minnesota. He has served on a wide variety of non-profit boards including chairing the United Way of 1000 Lakes and the Grand Itasca Hospital and Clinic boards. He is currently on the board of the Northland Foundation serving northeast Minnesota. His for profit experience includes six years in public accounting in St. Paul and twenty years in senior management positions including three years in New Zealand. He served as chief financial officer of UPM Blandin Paper in Grand Rapids and Cirrus Design in Duluth. He is a CPA (inactive) with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Babson College. He lives in Grand Rapids with his wife Charlotte.
Chief Operating Officer
Rod has served on the MDI management team since 2004. He has over 29 years of experience in manufacturing operations. He holds a bachelors’ degree in industrial management from Missouri State University. He is a graduate of the Blandin Community Leadership Program and serves on the board of the Habitat for Humanity in Grand Rapids, MN.
Chief Financial Officer
Marv has 35 years of experience in the financial arena, including twenty five years in executive leadership roles at variety of manufacturing and service organizations. Most recently, he was a financial executive at TCF Financial Corporation. Marv is a CPA with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of South Dakota. He is a Board Member of the Wayzata Community Education Board, head coach for Special Olympics golf and floor hockey teams and member of multiple professional organizations.
Vice President of Sales
As the Vice President of Sales, Barbara has served in a leadership capacity at MDI for 12 years. For 20 years, Barbara held multiple executive leadership roles at for-profit manufacturing organization ADC Telecommunications (Tyco Electronics). Barbara holds a Master of Science in Leadership degree from Capella University and a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of St. Thomas. She is a graduate of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program, and serves on the board of the Allina Hospice Foundation.
Director of Employment Services
Jeanne Eglinton, Director of Employment Service has been at MDI since 2014. She has spent more than 30 years in the human services field, supporting people with disabilities. Jeanne’s passion for making a difference in the lives of others led her to working with people with disabilities who were interested in finding and keeping a job in their community. Jeanne graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and holds a certification in Benefits Planning from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Peg McQuillan Porter
Director of Development
Peg McQuillan Porter joined MDI in 2015 as the Director of Development. She served in similar positions at Emergency Foodshelf Network and Memorial Blood Centers, both in the Twin Cities. She started her career in marketing at Hearst’s Country Living Magazine and then Connecticut Magazine. McQuillan studied journalism at South Dakota State University and fundraising at Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. She has served on several nonprofit boards.
Director of Operations
Todd Witherill, Director of Operations, joined MDI August 2016. He holds a bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology from the University of North Dakota. His primary responsibilities are providing leadership for all aspects of the operations department which includes production, assembly, quality, engineering, safety, purchasing, scheduling, and maintenance. He has over 24 years in manufacturing experience. Todd's impressive work experience includes Director of Operations at Warrior Manufacturing and Operations Manager at ASV.
Director of Human Resources
Debi Thompson joined MDI in 2016 as the Director of Human Resources. Debi has a unique background in human resources leadership with experience that spans from financial services to global manufacturing and local non-profits. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Carlson School of Management. She has served on several nonprofit boards, mentors students and volunteers for a national dog rescue group.
Director of Marketing
Katie Johnson has 16 years of experience in marketing communications in the manufacturing and healthcare industries. She is responsible for leading the marketing team and developing strategies that advance MDI’s revenue and mission. Before joining MDI Katie held numerous marketing and communications positions with International companies, such as General Mills, GN ReSound and Boys Town Hospital. A proud graduate of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Katie received his B.A. degree in Marketing. She has a MBA in Digital Marketing from Rutgers University. Katie has a strong passion for learning and is on the board of directors at the Northland Family Center.
