Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of people with disabilities and to promote inclusive employment practices. This year’s theme, “Moving People and Communities Forward,” is perfectly embodied in the story of Joe Vendetti.

Joe lives in Hibbing, Minnesota, and his journey began when he was connected to MDI through the Occupational Development Center (ODC), a community placement organization. He started as a contract employee in 2015 and was officially hired at MDI in 2016. Today, he’s not just a team member, he’s a valued conversion material welder who proudly takes on line lead responsibilities.

For Joe, MDI is more than just a workplace. It’s a community that has empowered him to grow professionally and personally. Through Unified Work’s Career Skills 1 course, Joe built confidence in teaching others, embraced teamwork, and stepped into leadership with a passion to keep learning. He enjoys the opportunity to help his coworkers and takes pride in being part of a supportive, inclusive environment.

Outside of work, Joe’s love for trains, a lifelong hobby, keeps him connected to his family and grounded in joy. Whether he’s working on his enormous train set with his mom and stepdad at Lake Lionel or adding to his collection, it’s a hobby that reflects his dedication and focus.

Joe is a proud graduate of Hibbing High School and a sports fan who likes football and baseball. His journey is a reminder that when individuals with disabilities are given opportunities to thrive, they move communities forward, inspiring coworkers, strengthening workplaces, and breaking down barriers.

Joe’s story is one of purpose, growth, and belonging. It reminds us why inclusive employment matters, not just for individuals, but for the collective progress of our communities. At Unified Work and MDI, stories like Joe’s aren’t the exception; they’re the goal.
