This year, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” reminds us that every individual brings unique strengths to their community and the workplace.
In that spirit, we’re proud to share Jay’s story, a 33-year-old athlete living with autism and an intellectual disability, whose journey reflects the power of perseverance, purpose, and possibility.
Finding Strength on the Field
Jay has been a Special Olympics athlete for over 20 years, competing in swimming, track, powerlifting, golf, and bocce ball. Through sports, he’s gained confidence, built leadership skills, and formed lifelong friendships. Each event he enters isn’t just a competition; it’s a celebration of teamwork, determination, and personal growth.
Thriving With Autism
Jay faces challenges with communication and social cues and manages high anxiety. These obstacles make routines and support systems essential. But what sets Jay apart is his resilience. Despite the daily hurdles, he shows up, gives his best, and continues to grow, proving that talent shines when nurtured with understanding and inclusion.
Jay lives independently in his apartment and navigates daily life with the help of community support. From cooking his meals to managing appointments, he exemplifies how determination, practice, and the right resources can pave the way to self-sufficiency and confidence.
A Life Centered on Wellness
Health and well-being are at the core of Jay’s routine. He runs 5Ks, swims regularly, and has taken up disc golf as a new hobby. He also focuses on balanced eating to support both his mental and physical health. For Jay, movement is more than fitness; it’s his way of staying grounded and energized.
A Champion Recognized
Jay finds joy in being part of a team and staying engaged with his community. Whether he’s attending sporting events or watching Survivor and American Ninja Warrior, he thrives on connection and camaraderie. These moments remind us all of the importance of feeling included and valued.
Jay has been selected to represent Minnesota in the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, his second national appearance, having competed in swimming 12 years ago. This achievement reflects not only his athletic talent but his enduring commitment to excellence and growth.
Why Jay’s Story Matters
Jay’s journey embodies this year’s NDEAM theme: Celebrating Value and Talent. He’s a reminder of what’s possible when we focus on potential over limitation, when communities embrace inclusion, and when individuals are empowered to lead on their terms.
This October, and every day, let’s honor people like Jay by building workplaces, teams, and cultures where everyone has the chance to thrive.
