This year marks the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and the 2025 theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” couldn’t be more fitting for a spotlight on one of MDI’s most tenured and beloved team members, Ben Pederson.
Ben’s story is one of perseverance, humor, heart, and hard work. Born in Minot, North Dakota, and raised in California and Minnesota, Ben’s childhood was filled with both challenges and triumphs. Adaptive sports, such as para hockey, floor hockey, and soccer, gave him confidence and a sense of community. He credits these early experiences, along with the encouragement of a dedicated teacher, with helping him feel proud of who he is today.
Work Ethic Built Early
Since high school, Ben has had an incredible work ethic, taking jobs in food service, custodial work, and more. His journey eventually led him to MDI and Hired Hands, where he’s spent nearly 20 years doing everything from recycling to pallet-making. Today, Ben works at MDI’s Cohasset facility and also holds a custodial job at Grand Rapids Marine.
Confidence Through Sport: A Special Olympics Standout
But work is only one part of Ben’s vibrant life. He’s a devoted uncle, a die-hard Deer River football fan, and a passionate Special Olympics athlete. From bowling and basketball to snowshoeing and now powerlifting, Ben gives his all. He’ll be representing Team Minnesota at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, deadlifting 265 pounds with pride. He also does squats and bench press.
Champion of the Deer River Community
He also gives back. Ben volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, rings the bell for the Salvation Army, and helps with the children’s church. His favorite pastime? Making people laugh.
At MDI, we believe employment is about more than a paycheck; it’s about purpose, dignity, and belonging. Ben embodies that spirit every day, reminding us that when you invest in people, they shine.
This NDEAM, let’s continue to champion inclusive workplaces and recognize the immense value and talent people with disabilities bring to our communities.
